History

The institution of the Ombudsman was formally established through the entry into force of the Island Ordinance establishing an Ombudsman for the Island Territory of Curaçao [A.B. 2001, no. 69]. This island ordinance was adopted by the island territory of Curaçao, which at that time was still part of the Country of the Netherlands Antilles. Following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10, 2010, the institution of the Ombudsman was anchored in the Constitution of Curaçao, thereby acquiring the status of a High Council of State. The activities and responsibilities of the Ombudsman have since been further elaborated in the National Ordinance on the Ombudsman [A.B. 2010, no. 87].
